Boats, Bugs and Beasties
School Science Week
The Project was pleased to be
involved in School Science Week and
work with pupils of primary school age to help them be more aware of the environment,
animals and their habitat and the life cycle of rivers and canals.
The content of the day was mapped to the national curriculum, with a special
guest speaker Vic Taylor of Mynewt Enterprises. He had the children spellbound
looking and handling bugs and beasties of all kinds,
including this coachcroach and Mr (or is it Mrs?) leafy legs, a leaf insect.Elaine Stanley, the Learning Service officer from British Waterways, gave the children an opportunity to study creatures that are found in the river, including some rather disgusting looking bloodworms, tadpoles, freshwater shrimp ...
Pupils also had the opportunity to go out on the river on a canal boat and be involved in the running of the boat from steering to operating the locks, as well as spotting the local wildlife.
If you would like to know more contact Elaine from British Waterways on 020 7985 7218 or at the Canal Boat Project, Wendy on 01279 424444.If you want to know more about keeping children amused on the river, British Waterways have a website just for you. Click on www.wow4water.net to download activities for kids on the river. There is a special teacher section as well.
Mynewt Enterprises also 'performs' at children's parties, so if you need a change from the usual clowns and magicians or maybe for a special treat for your class visit http://www.mynewtent.co.uk to find out more.

What the Teachers Said
The children loved steering the boats and opening the lock gates. A
brilliant day. Very well organised. All the adults were super! I hope we
can repeat this next year.

What the Pupils Said:
I liked when you got to feel the bugs.
I liked it when we got to steer the boat, but I didn't like answering questions.
I really liked learning about the birds and how the boat worked.
It was fun because I have never been on a boat before. So I was a bit scared.
I have had a brilliant day because we got to do fun things especially when we got to steer the boat.
I liked best going through the locks and steering the boat. I didn't like turning around and coming back.
I liked steering the boat but it could have been a bit faster.
I loved driving the boat. A really good day. I want to do it again. The lady and man are very good.
I liked the different types of ducks, the lovely day, the comfy seats and the reflections of trees in the water.
It was nice and quiet around and I loved the sounds of nature. I liked driving the boat and the wildlife and cooking. And it was the first time in one of these boats.
